Western North Carolina has exploded on the national microbrewery scene as something of an innovative brewing hotspot, with Asheville emerging as the leading "Beer City USA" in a USA Today poll of the finest beer towns in the land. In addition to the plethora of fine microbreweries dotting western NC, several major brewers have opened operations here, including the state- of-the-art Sierra Nevada and New Belgium breweries in Asheville.

In this program we'll explore craft brewing and breweries with Dr. Seán O'Connell, microbiologist and WCU Biology Department Chair by day and fearless leader of the Tuckaseegee Brewing Cooperative by night. Join us for this day-long program focused on beer and beer ingredients, as Seán helps us understand the art and science of beer brewing. The program will include a tour and lunch at the Sierra Nevada Brewery and a visit next door to the NC State University Hops Yard, with possible behind-the- scenes tours at the nearby White Labs yeast-making facility and Riverbend Malting. Join us and see what's brewing!
